No. Pores cannot be permanently shrunk, because a pore is not a valve — it has no muscle, no hinge, nothing that opens or closes. Your baseline pore size is set by genetics. But how large they look in the mirror is changeable, because that depends on three things you can act on: how much sebum you produce, how much elastic support the skin around the follicle opening still has, and the volume of the follicle itself.
Put differently: the correct goal is not "shrink my pores" but reduce whatever is making them look larger than they are. That distinction is the difference between a routine that works and years of buying products against the wrong expectation.

1. What a pore actually is

What we call a "pore" is the opening of a pilosebaceous unit: a canal holding a hair shaft, with a sebaceous gland draining into it. It is a fixed open structure, not an organ capable of active contraction.
This matters because it determines everything that follows. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, pores have no muscles, no hinges and no valves — so they cannot open or close on their own. Their geometric size is genetically determined, and no at-home topical changes that number.
So why do the same pores on the same face look obvious some days and faint on others? Because what changes is the skin around them, not the opening itself:
When the canal is packed with sebum and dead cells, the wall is stretched and the opening widens.
When the surrounding skin loses structural support, the opening loses its frame and splays outward.
When the surface catches light differently (oily shine, rough texture), the opening casts a deeper shadow and reads as larger.

2. The three real reasons pores look large

The dermatology literature attributes enlarged facial pores to three main clinical causes: high sebum excretion, decreased elasticity around the pore, and increased hair follicle volume. Each responds to a different intervention — which is why no single product works for every kind of enlarged pore.
Cause 1 — Sebum: the strongest correlate
This is the best-evidenced factor. A study of 60 people (30 men, 30 women) measuring pores by image analysis and sebum with a dedicated device found that sebum output correlated most strongly with pore size, ahead of both age and sex.
Two details worth noting from that study:
The correlation was stronger in men (r = 0.47) than in women (r = 0.38), suggesting additional hormonal factors in women.
Pore size increased significantly at ovulation (P = 0.008). If your pores seem to enlarge mid-cycle, that is a real, measurable phenomenon rather than imagination.
The mechanism: heavy sebum fills the canal, mixes with dead cells into an impaction, and that mass stretches the canal wall from the inside. Stretched long enough, the opening widens with it.
Cause 2 — Elasticity: the part nobody wants to hear
Around each follicle opening sits a scaffold of collagen and elastin holding it neatly closed. As that scaffold weakens, the opening loses its support and splays — like a buttonhole in fabric that has stretched.
Skin loses roughly 1% of its collagen per year after age 20. This is why pores at 40 look different from pores at 20 even when oiliness has dropped, and why pores on the cheeks often become teardrop or elongated oval rather than round: gravity plus a weakened scaffold pulls them lengthwise.
The single biggest accelerator here is UV exposure, which degrades collagen directly. Sunscreen is therefore the most effective "anti-large-pore" measure that almost nobody files under that heading.
Cause 3 — Follicle volume
A larger follicle means a wider opening. Follicle volume is androgen-responsive — the same reason the T-zone, nose and inner cheeks show far more visible pores than the temples or the eye area, where follicles are small and sebaceous glands sparse.
This is the factor least amenable to skincare, and it is the genetic component that any article promising to "eliminate" pores is overstating.
How to read these three: cause 1 responds well, cause 2 responds moderately and over months, cause 3 barely at all. Reasonable expectations follow from that ratio — not from advertising.
3. Two myths to drop immediately

The two most widespread beliefs about pores are both wrong, and both lead to behaviour that makes skin worse.
Myth 1: "Hot water opens pores, cold water closes them"
Completely false. As covered in section 1, pores have no contractile muscle — there is no structure to open or close in response to temperature.
So what is the "tightening" feeling after cold water? A temporary vasoconstriction that makes the surrounding skin slightly swollen and less red, so the pore looks fainter for a few minutes. It is a short-lived optical effect, not a structural change, and it disappears as soon as skin returns to normal temperature.
The real cost of this belief: people steam their face too often or wash with water that is too hot to "open the pores for a deep clean", which compromises the skin barrier. Dehydrated skin then compensates with more oil — worsening cause number one.
Myth 2: "Some topical makes pores permanently smaller"
Also false. No topical changes the genetically set size of a follicle. The products that genuinely work all act on the three causes in section 2 — they make pores look smaller by clearing the inside and reinforcing the scaffold outside.
This is not word-play. It has two practical consequences:
Results require maintenance. Stop, and sebum and dead cells re-accumulate, and pores return to their previous state within weeks to months.
Any product advertising "permanent pore tightening" is claiming more than its mechanism allows. That is a reliable signal to put it back on the shelf.
4. Surprising: more acne does not mean larger pores

In the 60-person study above, acne severity showed NO statistically significant association with pore size. This runs counter to nearly everyone's intuition, including many people working in the field.
The reason is that the two conditions share one factor without causing each other:
Both acne and enlarged pores involve high sebum output.

Enlarged pores additionally require mechanical and structural factors: a stretched canal, a weakened collagen scaffold, a large follicle.
The practical consequences are genuinely useful:
You can clear your acne completely and still have large pores — that is normal, not treatment failure.
Conversely, plenty of people have very visible pores and almost no acne.
So an acne protocol and a pore strategy are not the same plan, even though they overlap on oil control.

Fractional laser does not "shrink pores" — it acts on cause number two, remodelling perifollicular collagen so the opening regains its supporting frame. Understanding that mechanism is what keeps expectations honest.
The mechanism: the laser ablates microscopic columns of tissue while leaving intact bridges between them; the healing response then stimulates new collagen synthesis in the dermis around the follicle. On numbers, studies report pore size reductions of:
15–37% after a single fractional CO2 session — a wide band, reflecting large differences between individuals and settings.
around 30% after three sessions of a 1064nm picosecond laser with a microlens array.
around 40% after four sessions of a 1565nm non-ablative fractional laser.
Three things to read carefully in those figures:
1. The 15–37% band is very wide. What you get depends on your own dominant cause: if your pores are large mainly because of sebum, a laser is solving the wrong problem; if it is a weakened collagen scaffold, this is the right tool. 2. That is a percentage reduction measured on images, not "pores gone". A 30% reduction on a very large pore is still a visible pore. 3. Results are not permanent. New collagen ages too, and sebum keeps being produced. Without maintenance, pores return.
An important note for Asian skin: more pigmented skin carries a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. For pores specifically — a cosmetic concern rather than a medical condition — the risk-benefit calculation should be far more conservative than it is for atrophic scarring. Any energy-based procedure requires a doctor assessing your skin directly and setting appropriate parameters.
7. Habits actively making it worse
In most cases, pores deteriorate quickly not from a lack of good products but from these four habits.

8. Realistic expectations: how long, measured how, maintained how

Pores improve slowly — more slowly than inflammatory acne, more slowly than post-acne marks. Setting the wrong timeline is the usual reason people abandon a protocol that was in fact working.

4–6 weeks: the first visible change is usually not pore size but less shine and smoother surface texture — a sign cause one is coming under control.
3 months: the minimum assessment point for retinoids. Before that there simply isn't enough data to conclude.

On measurement, don't trust memory. Checking the mirror each morning is the worst possible assessment, because lighting, humidity and oil levels change daily.
